On the temporary nature of chalk murals...
I personally feel that chalk art is actually one of the more enduring mediums I work in. People of all ages, especially children, seem to relate to chalk on a very personal level. Working in a public setting allows me to be viewed as a performance artist by adults, and even more so as an interactive magic show by the younger crowd. Art galleries are often unexciting and sometimes intimidating places for kids, as there is usually strict etiquette to follow such as staying quiet or keeping hands at one's sides. My experiences with these chalk murals have been extremely pleasant because the viewers become witnesses to the creative process, and participants in a way. The images and feelings they get are ones that stay with them so much longer, often helping to inspire a new generation of artists.
